AURORA THEATRE Receives 2016 GOVERNOR'S AWARD for the Arts & Humanities

Under the gold dome, this past October 4th, Governor Nathan Deal recognized the state’s best and brightest individuals and organizations with the presentation of the 2016 Governor’s Awards for the Arts & Humanities. Aurora Theatre, Georgia’s second largest professional theater, proudly accepted one of the five awards given to organizations that have made significant contributions to Georgia's civic and cultural vitality through service to the humanities or excellence in the arts. Aurora was nominated by Doug Hooker, Executive Director of the Atlanta Regional Commission, and Bartow Morgan, Jr., CEO of BrandBank for its continued artistic excellence, immense impact on the region and its thriving educational programming that embraces cultural diversity in both the English and Spanish speaking communities.

“Ann-Carol and I are extremely grateful that Aurora Theatre is being recognized as one of Georgia’s major cultural assets,” remarked an ecstatic Anthony Rodriguez, Co-Founder and Producing Artistic Director of Aurora Theatre. “In our 21st season, it is important that we, as arts organizations, contribute more significantly than just producing great musicals and plays. Aurora remains dedicated to empowering artists who have not traditionally had a voice, plus we are cultivating the next generation of artists, arts administrators and theater patrons—and we are humbled to accept this prestigious award.”

At the ceremony, held in the North Wing of the State Capitol building, a group of past and present members of the Aurora Theatre Apprentice Company performed the song “Alabanza” from the hit musical In the Heights, a co-production between Aurora Theatre and Theatrical Outfit, which recently closed after a sold-out run of more than 18,000 patrons. The awards were immediately followed by a reception in the rotunda.

Aurora Theatre was recognized alongside some of the region’s top names and organizations including Kenny Leon, the Beach Institute and the Museum School of Avondale Estates.

Spine Chilling Scares Abound During LAWRENCEVILLE GHOST TOURS This October

AURORA THEATRE TO HOST ANNUAL SPOOKTACULAR EVENT SERIES FOR THRILL SEEKERS OF ALL AGES

Screams of fun are in store this fall during Aurora Theatre’s Lawrenceville Ghost Tours, spooking Atlanta audiences all month long! Costumed storytellers will bring accounts of historical haunts and paranormal activity to life during a 90-minute guided stroll around the picturesque downtown square, giving the living a look at Lawrenceville’s hair-raising past. Free of grotesque effects and startling of patrons, metro-Atlanta’s most popular ghost tour features vivid storytelling to portray the mysterious myths and legends of a moonlit walk through Honest Alley, the haunted jail and other devilish destinations.

“When we first produced the Lawrenceville Ghost Tours 12 years ago, we hoped to launch an event that would be just as much educational as it would be entertaining,” said Anthony Rodriguez, Aurora Theatre Producing Artistic Director. “By combining historical elements from Lawrenceville’s past with the spooky element of a night time stroll through a dark alley, we’ve created a tradition that’s just as fun for adults as it is for kids.”

The third annual Haunted Cemetery Tour is a ghoulishly good time for courageous souls seeking an extra fright, October 9-31! Hailed for its eerie encounters with EVP (electronic voice phenomena) and floating orbs, thrill seekers will follow Madame Macabre (Cynthia Rintye) through tombstone paths as she recounts her own chilling tale that inspired this tour! Guests should wear closed-toe shoes, bring a flashlight and be at least 13-years-old to participate; a signed release form will be required for every attendee.

Lawrenceville Ghost Tours is presented every day in October with the Haunted Cemetery Tour happening October 9-31. Ticket reservations can be made by calling the Box Office at 678-226-6222 or online at tickets.auroratheatre.com. Tickets for Sunday through Thursday ghost tours are $12 (adults) and $9 (children); Friday and Saturday ghost tour tickets are $15 (adults) and $12 (children). Tickets for the cemetery tours are $20. For more information, visit scarystroll.com or email info@scarystroll.com.

*Tours are also offered year-round, May through September
Haunted cemetery tours are as follows:

A Christmas Story, The Musical chronicles young and bespectacled Ralphie Parker as he schemes his way toward the holiday gift of his dreams, an official Red Ryder® Carbine-Action 200-Shot Range Model Air Rifle (“You’ll shoot your eye out kid!”). An infamous leg lamp, outrageous pink bunny pajamas, a maniacal department store Santa, and a triple-dog-dare to lick a freezing flagpole are just a few of the distractions that stand between Ralphie and his Christmas wish. Chock-full of delightful songs and splashy production numbers, A Christmas Story, The Musical, has proudly taken its place as a perennial holiday classic for the whole family.

Tickets went on sale Sunday, September 18. Tickets start at $33.50 and are available by visiting www.BroadwayInAtlanta.com/Christmas, calling 1-855-285-8499 or visiting the Fox Theatre Box Office (660 Peachtree St NE, Atlanta, GA 30308). The Associated Press called A Christmas Story, The Musical “a joyous Christmas miracle,” while The New York Times wrote “I was dazzled. You’d have to have a Grinch-sized heart not to feel a smile spreading across your face.”

A Christmas Story, The Musical features a festive and nostalgic holiday themed score by composer/lyricist team Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, with a book by Joseph Robinette, based on the writings of radio humorist Jean Shepherd and the 1983 holiday film favorite.

CENTER FOR PUPPETRY ARTS Presents the return of 'THE GHASTLY DREADFULS, October 12 - 29

(Photo Courtesy of The Center for Puppetry Arts)

The Ghastly Dreadfuls returns to the Center for Puppetry Arts, October 12-29 for a 10th season of spine-tingling storytelling with a cast of characters that has made it an Atlanta cult classic. Artistic director Jon Ludwig describes the evening as, “a kind of dark vaudeville with a variety of performance styles and sensibilities. There’s really something for everybody.” The evening is a compendium of ghost stories and spectacle with puppets, live music and dance.
The Ghastly Dreadfuls haunts the stage with some fan favorites (including 11:59, Grim Grinning Ghosts and The Girl in the New Dress), and a new piece, The Horrific Experiment: A Grand Guignol, by Andre de Lorde and Alfred Binet, adapted by Richard J Hand and Michael Wilson. A turn-of-the-century genre of horror theatre that originated in France, Grand Guignol, was famously gory and darkly provocative. Grand Guignol productions specialized in graphic, naturalistic imagery intended to shock and provoke audiences. In The Horrific Experiment, a doctor and his assistant go to gruesome extremes to bring his daughter back to life.

Winner of the 2012 UNIMA Citation of Excellence Award and created by Jon Ludwig and Jason Hines, The Ghastly Dreadfuls rises again this season with a huge variety of characters, stories and songs created for fans ages 18 and up. This show isn’t for those who take life (or death) too seriously. The eerie stories, spooky songs and devilish dances will take audiences to a world beyond this mortal plane.
A beer and wine bar will be open before the show and during intermission.

Tickets are $18.75 (Members) and $25 (Nonmembers) and include entry to the performance and museum. Tickets are available at www.puppet.org or by calling 404-873-3391.

Worlds of Puppetry Museum
The all-inclusive ticket also admits patrons to the Center’s Worlds of Puppetry Museum featuring the Jim Henson and Global collections. The Henson collection is the largest collection of Henson puppets and artifacts in the world. Also on display (and included with an all-inclusive ticket or a museum-only ticket) is a special exhibit, Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: Journey to Goblin City-A Special 30th Anniversary Celebration.
